SENIOR WELLBEING
SWELL is an evidence based, progressive strength development program for older persons.
Instructors typically bring the SWELL program to venues where older persons can readily access this supervised program. These include nursing homes, community centres, independent living retirement villages and a range of community health sites. Staff are trained Cert 3 Fitness Leaders and undertake special training for this specific population at The Hampstead Centre. Bodies requesting the program may opt for 3 month packages with the option to renew. Sessions cater for up to 15 members and start at $45 per session.
SWELL is a proactive health intervention program targeting individuals at risk of lifestyle diseases such as Type 2 diabetes, coronary disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, osteoporosis. SWELL aims to delay the onset of such diseases and to maintain the bodies skeletal and muscular functionality for independent living. Muscular strength development, increased flexibility, improved balance and fall prevention are targeted outcomes.
Instruction typically takes place in a group setting which allows for social interaction which is encouraged among participants. There is minimal reliance on equipment as body weight and flexibility exercises comprise a fair proportion of the program. Delivery takes from 30-45 minutes. There is a strong emphasis on safety and commencing conservatively before building into the program.
Noel Speck developed the program which has been trialled over the last 5 years at EFM Health Clubs at West Lakes and Campbelltown and in the Philip Kennedy Centre at Largs Bay.
